● Sunshine Coast, British Columbia

Working in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Resource Centre, the Do A Kindness campaign was a community storytelling project which aims to raise awareness about poverty in the Lower Sunshine Coast. By taking a solutions-focused approach and sharing the lived experiences of community members on key issues such as homelessness, food security and transportation — we hope to continue building awareness and, ultimately, steps folks can take to get involved.

A key challenge to the project is helping to reframe poverty. Many people may believe that poverty is the result of a person's "bad choices," but how a person manages any life challenge or crisis depends on the resources they have access to. Such as supportive family and friends, education, social positions, contacts, mobility, access to services and more. Income level alone does not explain what causes poverty.
